How to submit a reading text

Texts should initially be sent in Italian (and in Word), not later than the date of the preparatory meeting (generally a Tuesday 2 or 3 weeks before the event) but in the case of foreign texts you should have the original ready in case your text is chosen (it is likely, given the limited time available for the evening events, that no more than half the texts submitted will be chosen: don’t be discouraged!). If the foreign language presents non-Latin characters, let us please have the transliteration and of preference, the original (in Word). If you are proposing a foreign text, make sure you have checked on the availability of a native speaker to read the original at the event. Timing is important. Foreign language texts in particular – being read in the original and on translation – should not take longer than 2 minutes to read. Italian texts can be granted slightly more latitude.

  • name of proposing person
  • author’s name
  • title of the work
  • name of translator
  • You must also supply publishing details:  Book title (ideally first publication of your piece, but a ‘Collected Works’ will pass) / city of publication, publisher and date of first publication (e.g. Milan, Adelphi, 1998)
  • Same details for Italian translation (if you have found the translation unattributed on the internet, please make an effort to identify the translator and the published edition. We accept that this may not always be possible)
  • Please avoid capital letters

when to whom send your submissions

Texts should be submitted to curators in time for the preparatory meetings – usually  2 weeks before meetings and sent around mid-month each month.

reading texts, curators and meetings

Each month two or three different members of the Casa volunteer to take charge of the selection of texts for the programme and coordinate the readers. A couple of experienced members of the Casa may flank a new one. Curators should:

  • notify their selection of texts as soon as possible after the preparation meeting
  • notify proposing members and readers the deadline for the delivery of final reading-texts (complete with publishing details) and audio-recordings of readings
  • before sending selected texts (all in one message) to be printed, verify translations and transmit as a single document; separate file, selections indexed and numbered in reading order, with proposer author and title of piece
  • verify publishing data
  • handle the coordination and presentation of the meeting (for the time being online, zoom invitation)

audio recordings

how to record your audio contribution for the online archive online & podcast

Cell-phones seem to work best

  • iPhone and Mac systems: Memo Vocali
  • Samsung app: Voice recorder
  • All Android systems – Samsung; Huawei etc:
  • For Registratore Vocale Facile use this link https://goo.gl/94E4Om to download app for Android
  • Try to find somewhere without background noise
  • speak 20-40 cm from the microphone, better the closer option speaking at a normal conversation level – it sounds more compelling and, in short, ‘works better’
  • pause for a second at the beginning and end of your recording
  • don’t rush: pronounce all the words clearly
  • listen back: you are the best judge of whether you could do better

be sure to preface the reading with

  • your full name (whether reading the original or the translation) followed by ‘is reading’ or similar
  • author’s name
  • title of the work
  • best format mp3/m4a; aac will also be OK; mav and quicktime not.

when and where to send

Send your recording as soon as possible after the list of selected texts has been notified, and not later than the first Tuesday of the month (a week before the event), to:
giorgia@555studios.net / giacomomartini.fr@gmail.com
For queries and clarifications, contact Giorgia (Fiorio) at the above email or on 346 660816

The monthly event at the Teatrino (currently online)

On the second Tuesday of the month 6pm to 7.45pm, October through June at the Teatrino del Palazzo Grassi, San Marco 3260 (off Campo San Samuele)
(in recent years there has also been a special event in September – not necessarily on the second Tuesday – on the theme of ‘Glass’ to coincide with Venice Glass Week)
We are currently staging this event via Zoom, on the same date.
Look out for email notifications as to time and Zoom meeting details

Preparatory meeting

This has been something of a moveable feast over the years. It is usually around 7pm.
The partying is curtailed at 9pm to get down to business and read (in Italian only at this point) – and time – all the proposed texts.
Again, in the current circumstances, this has to take place online. The carousing is up to you. Look out for email notifications as to time and meeting detail

Communications protocol

  • From/to la Casa delle Parole, in principle collective communications between members or the Board take place through: Chiara Romanelli: chiararomanelliposta@gmail.com
  • Communications with Palazzo Grassi, institutional entities and non-members through Viretta Micheluzzi and Marco Aurelio Di Giorgio: virettab@hotmail.it, casadelleparole2020@gmail.com
  • Communications between members or curators of texts and audio: one-to-one contact with involved person only. Avoid using ‘answer all’.

Annual voting of new themes

Each year, after the last meeting of the Season members are invited to propose themes for the coming season and send them to Cecilia Gualazzini and Marco Ceresa cecilia@iuav.it or ceresa@unive.it
Members will be asked to vote on an edited list of proposals (repetitions merged, previous themes excluded, etc),. Voting habitually takes place at a general end-of-season meeting – otherwise online.

Renewal and voting of Board and President

Each three years Board and President are renewed. Each associate member has right to candidate for the Board and/or the Presidency. How to proceed to vote will be communicated in due time.
